Equally important to selecting the right genus of wood for your flooring application is selecting the appropriate finish. There are several surface finish types to wood flooring . Know the different types and what works best for you.
- Penetrating Stain and Wax – a protective seal is obtained once the finish soaks into the wood pores and hardens.
- Water-Based Urethane – this type of finish is clear and doesn’t yellow.
- Moisture-Cured Urethane – this solvent base polyurethane is durable and moisture resistant.
- Oil-Modified Urethane – this solvent-based polyurethane is easy to apply and the finish ambers.
- Conversion Varnish – when dried, the finish is clear to slightly amber.
Some of these finishes have very strong odors and their applications are best left to flooring professionals.
